I wasn't able to attend the seventh session of this course as I was sick, but thanks to the Google Slides document provided by the teachers and help from some of my classmates I was able to understand and summarise the topic of gamification which was covered that day. Games, GBL (Game Based Learning) and Gamification are different things.

https://www.upsidelearning.com/infographics/games-vs-game-based-learning-vs-gamification/ Game: According to the Cambridge Dictionary a game is "an activity or sport that people play, usually with rules and needing skill". GBL: Focuses on the content. You learn from playing. The goal is to learn.
Gamification: It's not about winning or losing, but "leveling up". You get rewards and badges when you get to the next level.
Both, GBL and Gamification use games to motivate the students. GBL is harder and more expensive to build whereas gamification can be quite cheap and easy.
The Hero's Journey
It's always a cycle procress.
They have an objective that we need to understand the purpose of the narrative.
Rules are important. They create the magic of the magic circle and people must accept the rules if they want to play the game.
The freedom of choice, puts you in the centre of the game. It creates purpose and the player feels motivated and involved.
There is also freedom to miss. Cognitive flexibility, by which you have to adapt and change when something happens.
Feedback is important so that you can tell if you are doing well or not. Grading is our feedback. Types of players

Killers - They play to compete with others
Achievers - Play to gain success and prestige
Socializers - Play for the social aspect rather than the game itself
Explorers - Play to discover new areas and possibilities
